Frequently Asked Questions

Can I set an appointment to come in for a consultation?

DVLS does not accept walk-ins or consultations by appointment. All consultations are completed by telephone. If your case is accepted, it will be assigned to a volunteer attorney. You and your attorney can then make arrangements to exchange information about your case.

Where do I call to complain about an attorney?

Dissatisfied clients should contact the Managing Attorney who will arrange an informal hearing of the parties within ten days of the request.  Following the hearing, the Managing Attorney will issue a written disposition to the parties within five days.

The client has the right to appeal the disposition to the Board of Directors' Grievance Committee (three board members) within ten days of receipt of the disposition. The Grievance Committee will then meet with the parties. The Grievance Committee shall set forth its decision and rationale in writing within five business days.

If you are represented by a private attorney, you should contact the Disciplinary Council and the Board of Professional Responsibility at (302) 577-7042.

How do I find an attorney who specializes in certain areas of the law?

Check the yellow pages or contact the Lawyer Referral Service to arrange a consultation for a $35 fee.

Can someone help me fill out my Family Court petitions?

The Family Court has an Intake Unit to assist with filling out of court forms but can not provide legal assistance.
